Week in review: July 5-11

The week of July 5-11 was an exciting time in sports all over the globe. The Fifa World Cup came to an end along with the NBA free agency frenzy getting sorted out and the Tampa Bay Rays finishing the first half of the season on a good note. Germany defeated Argentina 3-2 in the 3rd place game with Spain beating the Netherlands 1-0 to take home the World Cup title. Spain scored in extended play on Sunday to take home their first ever World Cup championship. Turning toward the NBA, teams have been waiting for years for this offseason which was hyped as the greatest free agent class ever with the Miami Heat being the big winners. The Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg has announced money will not be an object when it comes to the team adding pieces at the upcoming trade dealine. With a little over 3 weeks remaining the Rays could be a major player in the trade market, most likely looking to add a power bat to their struggling lineup. This is great news for all Rays fans. This also acknowleges the team’s understanding that this season may be their best chance of bringing home a World Series title and their comminment to 2010.
