August 30th, 2010

Look Ahead: 8/30 – 9/5

Rays

After a series win versus the Red Sox over the weekend the Rays enter the week of Auguest 30th tied with the Yankees for the best record in baseball and a share of the lead in the A.L. East. The Rays stay at home with a three game series vs. the Toronto Blue Jays before heading off to Baltimore for a weekend series versus the Orioles. The Jays come into town with Tampa Bay now having a two game win streak and have won 10 consecutive series against Toronto at Tropicana Field. Their record is 41-25 overall at home for the season and a respectable 39-25 on the road. Something to look for will be strong outings from starting pitchers Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann, both trying to build off their shaky first starts back from the D.L. Also, newly acquired outfielder Brad Hawpe should join the team on Tuesday. Look for him to play some right field and occasionally DH. It will be interesting to see if 1B/DH Dan Johnson may have saved his season and chance of remaining on the roster after hitting the game winning home run on Saturday night and the go ahead hit on Sunday night.

Bucs

Rookie WR Mike Williams continues to impress throughout training camp and the first 3 preseason games. He has no doubt put himself in position to not only make the roster but contribute and possibly start. Another rookie WR has also impressed coaches and teammates but no it’s not second round pick A. Benn, it’s Preston Parker. The one time troubled collegiate athlete has seemed to put his off the field problems behind him and has his priorities in order. This years wide receivers bring a competitiveness and athleticism that has been lacking in the past. Also, top draft picks Gerald McCoy and Brian Price both looked like stars while dominating the Jaguars o-line. Neither recorded a sack but Bucs haven’t had that kind of pressure by their interior d-line since Sapp was here. The Bucs are currently 1-2 on the preseason and will finish it up by playing at Houston, Thursday, Sept. 2 versus the Texans.

Bulls

This will most certainly be an interesting year for the USF Bulls. Skip Holtz takes over a program that has just lost the only coach they ever knew. Jim Leavitt, brought the Bulls from obscurity to the national scene and into the Big East. While some South Florida fans applauded Leavitt’s departure, others worry with so many questions heading into the 2010 season. After losing five defensive players now in NFL camps the defense has got to have young guys step up and make plays. This years defense is without the stars of last season and will rely on using a deeper bench, rotating through five or six d-ends. The defense lost key players at every position with Jason Pierre-Paul and George Selvie on the ends, linebacker Kion Wilson, conerback Jerome Murphy and safety Nate Allen all heading to the NFL. On Offense, the Bulls will try and put together more of a balanced attack and have the running backs take on more of a role. Last season, super Freshman B.J. Daniels was thrust into starting duty after Matt Grothe was lost for the year in just their second game. Running back Moise Plancher will be the starter after Mike Ford’s dismissal, with Sophomore Demetrius Murray expected to back up. The main receiving threat will be returning Senior Carlton Mitchell at what may be the weakest part of the entire team. Da Bulls will open their season Saturday, Sept. 4, at home versus Stony Brook. Kickoff will be 7:00 PM at Raymond James Stadium.
