The 2nd Annual "Winter Smash" tournament took place January 29th atWoodlawn Park in St.Petersburg. It was once again another day of fun inthe sun and some great softball action. There were the usual cast ofcharacters in the men’s division with some newbies mixed in including aco-ed division for the first time ever. The co-ed division had 3 total teams coming from all over the state tocompete for the Crunch Cup. The Magic Stix advanced to the Championsipgame by winning both of their division games. The Kings and Knightsbattled their way through the divisional round to face off against theWild Things in the semi-final. When Wild Things took it down 13-9 theChampioship game was now set. Magic Stix vs. Wind Things for all themarbles. Team Wild Things rode the wave of moment and won it all 19-5. The MagicStix bats were finally silenced but they did have outstanding performancesby Tamara, Jimmy, Destinee, Mike and Tasha. The Wild Things leadoff batterB.J. had a fantastic final game by going 4-5 with a HR, 3 runs, and 2RBI’s. Von Brown of the Wild Things won the MVP award with a tournamentleading 10 RBI‘s. Congrats to manager and starting picther Ratree and allof team Wild Things. The men’s division had a total of 7 teams broken down to one division of 4and another with 3. The Deacons made the playoffs and found themselves upagainst #1 seed Kings of Crunch. The other semi-final game came down tothe Fighting Whities vs. Firestorm Softball. The Kings of Crunch took care of business with an all around team effortand advanced to the Championship. They busted loose in the 3rd inning witha 15 spot and won the game 25-2. In the other semi-final Firestorm took acommanding 16-3 lead after 4 ½ innings behind the strong hitting of Shawn,Matt, Darren and Anthony. It looked liked Daniel’s HR for team Firestormwould be the finishing touch but the Fighting Whities would not be deniedand put 9 runs up in the bottom half of the 4th innning. The teams battledback and forth before the Whities finally won it the bottom of the 7thinning 18-17. The Championship game in the men’s division was now set withthe Fighting Whities squaring off vs. the Kings of Crunch. The Whities came out the gates strong and took and early 2-0 lead. K.O.C.came right back in the bottom half of the 1st with 3 runs of their own.The lead switched 4 times in the first 3 innings before K.O.C. kept theirbats rolling and pulled away to a 16-7 victory. Brian and Ryland of theFighting Whities did their best to contribute with a HR each in the finalgame. Team table setters Scott and AJ lead the way for K.O.C. by going acombined 5-6 with 5 runs and 2 RBI’s in the final. The winning pitcherwas Rich Elsner. Congrats to team manager Kyle and all of Kings of Crunch.
