Congratulations to Chuck’s Natural Food Marketplace! They are the champions of Tier 1 and take home the Crunch Cup! And congrats also to Oakhurst Tavern for winning Tier 2!
The 8 teams in the 2010 “Feel the Heat” Warm-Up Softball Tournament took the field for divisional play at 9:00 am. Some close, low-scoring games highlighted the divisional round as each team completed their 2 games. Team Speed Gel, runners-up from May Madness, finished the divisional round as the only 2-0 team and locked up the #1 overall seed in Tier 1. After that, a total of 6 teams were deadlocked at 1-1, leaving run differential to decide who made Tier 1 and who made Tier 2. When it was all said and done, Team Speed Gel, Chuck’s Natural Food Marketplace, Jager Mafia, and ITT Tech made Tier 1. Oakhurst Tavern, St. Pete Street Sweepers, Smokin Barrels, and Collins Electric would make up Tier 2.
The playoffs started with the top 2 seeds winning their semifinals in each Tier. This would set up two exciting championship games: Chuck’s Natural Food Marketplace vs. Team Speed Gel in Tier 1 and St. Pete Street Sweepers vs. Oakhurst Tavern in Tier 2.
In the Tier 2 final, the two-time defending champion St. Pete Street Sweepers got out to an early 10-4 lead after 3 innings. The Sweepers were looking good but then the rain came, causing a 20 minute delay. After the rain stopped, Oakhurst Tavern came out firing. They shortened the lead to 11-8 going into the bottom of the 7th and final inning. Oakhurst would then put up 4 runs to win the game, highlighted by a walk-off single by Spencer Voght. Trent Henderson scored the winning run as Oakhurst Tavern completed an exciting 12-11 victory to win Tier 2.
In the Tier 1 final, Chuck’s Naturals got off to a quick 5-0 lead after 2 innings as the teams vied for the Crunch Cup. They would add on to this lead in the 5th inning, and would hold off a dangerous Speed Gel team to take the win 11-0 in 5 innings.
