The “Flash Some Leather” REC softball tournament took place Saturday,

April 23rd at Vanech Complex in Dunedin, FL. The sun was blazing and the

balls were flying out at a record pace. The competition level was on point

with 8 teams in the men’s and 5 in the co-ed division. Everyone played

their hearts out competing for the thrill of victory and the agony of

defeat, and of course, the Crunch Cup!

In the co-ed division the Blue Bombers of Cap Coral went undefeated

through the divisional round and took the #1 seed heading into the

playoffs. Team Sneak Attack went on to beat team Tiger Blood 13-7 in the

first round but came up short after losing to the Bombers 12-2 in the

Semi’s. In the #2 vs. #3 semi-final game Nutz n Honeyz took down the Mean

Machine 14-3 avenging an earlier 15-13 loss. The co-ed Championship was

now set with the CC Blue Bombers vs. Nutz n Honeyz.

Team Nutz n Honeyz brought the lumber and came out to a quick 15-0 lead

through the first 3 innings. Tournament batting average leader Ryan

Ruggieri of CC had another great game but came up short. Lead by Jimmy

and Mark, Nutz n Honeyz kept it rolling and won it all 19-4. Congrats to

both teams players and managers, especially Nutz n Honeyz for their first

ever Cruch Cup!

The men’s division was a highly contested battle throughout. Defending

champs No Crap On Tap went undefeated in their first 2 games and went into

the playoffs as the #3 seed. Team S.W.A.T. also went undefeated and were

the #2 seed just behind team Fellowship of Encouragement as the #1 seed.

The first round of the playoffs was filled with near upsets. The Orlando

Bombers almost pulled it out. The #8 seed Bombers lead most of the game

before #1 Fellowship put up a 9 spot in the 5th inning and won the first

round match up 13-11. #2 S.W.A.T. had to rally late to get a tough victory

over the #7 seed the Game Blouses in a 14-12 instant classic type victory.

In the 3 vs. 6 game No Crap On Tap took care of business 19-6 over Cuse

Maintenance and the 4 vs. 5 had the Backdoor Sliders dominating team I’d

Hit It with a score of 18-7.

The Semifinals were now set with the #5 seed Backdoor Sliders squaring off

against tournament leading #1 seed Fellowship of Encouragement. In one of

the highest scoring games of the day, the Sliders took a 15-13 lead after

just 2 innings of play. Fellowship took the lead back but surrendered it

late. The Backdoor Sliders had a 7 run 5th inning and never looked back

with a 23-18 victory and a spot in the Championship.

N.C.O.T played nearly flawless on defense all day. Along with the leather

they brought the sticks too and out hit S.W.A.T. in another slugfest

22-12. The Championship was now set with the defending Crunch Cup winners

No Crap On Tap vs. the Backdoor Sliders. This was surely to be a thrilling

game after their divisional match up, which was won 24-23 by N.C.O.T.

Backdoor Sliders jumped on them quick and took an early 5-0 lead after the

top of the 1st. N.C.O.T. fought back with the slick fielding of Bo and

Trent and the timely hitting of tourney MVP Ryan but it was too little too

late. Led by the home run hitting of Rafferty and all around staggering

lineup the Backdoor Sliders took it down 17-7. Congrats to the Backdoor

Sliders for their first ever Crunch Cup!

Thanks again to everyone who participated for a really fun event and

another great day of softball action!!!
