The 2010 May Madness softball tournament is in the books! Congratulations to the Troublemakers for taking home the title, and thanks to everyone who participated! Each of the 13 teams in the tournament fought through 4 regular season games with their sights set on the playoffs. The blazing sun didn’t stop the three division winners, the Troublemakers, Team Speed Gel, and Smack Yo Pitch Up, who all went 4-0 and locked up their spots in the playoffs. The Troublemakers and Team Speed Gel used their big bats to get the job done while Smack Yo Pitch Up relied on strong pitching and defense. Smack Yo Pitch Up got a huge comeback win against the 2-time defending champion St. Pete Street Sweepers in game 2 to set the tone. The 4th and final playoff spot would go to the Cyclones, who got in on run differential over Chuck’s Natural Food Marketplace behind a big 35-2 win in their final game. They were paced by Chris Odom, whose 6 home runs and 22 RBIs in the regular season led the tournament. With the playoffs set, semifinal action got underway just before 5:00 pm. In the first semifinal, the 4th seeded Cyclones jumped out to a huge lead over the 1st seeded Troublemakers, leading 13-5 after 4 innings. The upset was almost complete until the Troublemakers exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the 5th behind 5 big RBIs by Doug Mays. They would hold on for the 18-13 win. In the other semifinal, 3rd seeded Team Speed Gel scored early and often against 2nd seeded Smack Yo Pitch Up and held on for a 19-8 win despite a valiant effort from Smack Yo Pitch Up. The finals were set: #3 Team Speed Gel vs. #1 Troublemakers. Team Speed Gel got off to a quick start in the top of the 1st, leading 3-0 after a 3-run HR by Jason Romano. The Troublemakers, however exploded for two more big innings in the 2nd and 4th, scoring 8 and 10 respectively. They would go on to cruise to a 19-3 win and took home the Crunch Cup! Congratulations to the champions and to all teams for participating and putting on a great show.
